Barrel camping: Experience the Coziest Adventure

Barrel camping: Experience the Coziest Adventure

Are you looking for a unique camping experience? Look no further than barrel camping! This emerging trend in camping accommodations offers a cozy and unforgettable adventure. Imagine sleeping in a giant wooden barrel that is equipped with all the essentials for a comfortable stay. Let’s dive into this exciting camping experience!

Finding a barrel

One of the best places to try barrel camping is at Camping Bannwaldsee, a picturesque campground near Schwangau, Germany. It is conveniently located near the famous King’s Castles in southern Bavaria, such as Neuschwanstein, Hohen Schwangau, and Hohes Schloß.

To reach the campsite, you have various options. If you prefer to travel light, you can access the campground by train or bus. The campground even has a bus stop right at its entrance, making it easily accessible for tourists visiting nearby Schwangau, Füssen, and other cities and attractions. Alternatively, if you want more freedom and flexibility, renting a car from Munich is a great choice. Just keep in mind that gas prices in Europe are relatively high, and be aware of any potential hidden fees when renting a car.

How to sleep in a barrel

Once you arrive at the campground, you’ll be amazed at the comfort and coziness of the barrel accommodations. The barrels are surprisingly spacious and feature a large bed on a platform at the rear, two convertible benches that serve as smaller beds, and a wall-mounted table. With electricity and well-insulated walls, you will have all the modern amenities you need for a pleasant stay. However, be mindful that on hot days, it can get quite warm inside the barrel when the sun shines directly on it.

A little Deutsch’ll do ya

Don’t worry if you’re not fluent in German. Our friendly campground neighbors, Marie and László, taught us that language is not always a barrier when it comes to making new friends. Even with limited German skills, we managed to communicate and have a great time together. It’s incredible how children can find common ground and have fun, regardless of language barriers. Adults could certainly learn a thing or two from their open-mindedness and adaptability.

Campground recreation

The campground is located near the picturesque Bannwaldsee, which offers the perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim. If you’re traveling with children, they will surely enjoy the water activities. Our young friend László was particularly enthusiastic about diving off the dock and spending as much time as possible in the water. The campground also provides access to beautiful hiking trails, including a cable car ride to the summit of Tegelberg. From there, you can admire breathtaking panoramic views of the German and Austrian countryside, with the impressive Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, in the distance.

This is not a backpacker hostel

While camping in a barrel provides an affordable and unique way to stay near the King Ludwig castles, it is essential to remember that this is not your typical backpacker hostel experience. Respect the family-oriented and recreational atmosphere of the campground. Unlike bustling hostels, camping offers a more serene and tranquil setting. Be mindful of fellow campers and their need for peace and quiet. Also, having some basic German language skills will go a long way in ensuring smooth communication and interactions with others.
