If you are a nature lover, camping in Lanzarote is an experience you won’t want to miss on your next adventure to the “Isla de los Volcanes.” While there are various accommodation options available, staying at a campsite in Lanzarote will provide you with a wilder and more authentic experience.
The Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, are among our favorite destinations in Spain. Camping on the island has allowed us to see it from a different perspective and fully enjoy the starry night sky, making it one of the best places to photograph the Milky Way.
Where to Camp in Lanzarote
Currently, there are only two authorized campsites in Lanzarote: Camping de Papagayo in Playa Blanca and Camping de La Graciosa. Let’s explore the details of each one.
Camping de Papagayo
Located near Playa Blanca, in Caleta del Congrio, Camping de Papagayo is surrounded by virgin white sand beaches, including Playa Papagayo, one of the best beaches in Spain. This campsite is open year-round and offers 284 spacious lots that can accommodate up to 2,000 people.
The facilities at Camping de Papagayo are complete and include toilets, showers, sinks, water supply, and sewage hookup for each lot. There is also community lighting and a surveillance service to ensure your safety. Additionally, the campsite offers a beautiful beach with lifeguards, wheelchair access, and a barbecue area for outdoor cooking.
During your stay here, you can also explore the nearby Monumento Natural Los Ajaches, embark on exhilarating hikes, and indulge in the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean.
Prices
The campsite charges €8 per day for tents and €11 per day for motorhomes. Residents of the Canary Islands enjoy reduced prices of €6 for tents and €9 for motorhomes.
Permit Application
To camp at Camping de Papagayo, you need to apply for a permit beforehand. The application form can be found on the Cabildo de Lanzarote or Ayuntamiento de Yaiza websites. You can submit the request in person at the Lanzarote Camping Area Offices or by phone.
Camping de El Salado en La Graciosa
Camping de El Salado, located on La Graciosa island, offers another authorized camping area in Lanzarote. Situated on the longest beach of the island, Playa del Salado, this campsite is a paradise of volcanic landscapes and dreamy waters.
To reach La Graciosa from Lanzarote, you can take a ferry that only takes 25 minutes to reach Caleta de Sebo. From there, it’s just a 15-minute walk to Camping de El Salado. Alternatively, you can book an excursion that includes a ferry ride and a sailing trip along the coast.
Camping de El Salado provides 50 camping lots, allowing up to 10 people each. You can only camp in tents, and the facilities include showers, toilets, and a water supply source. It’s important to note that gas and stoves are prohibited, so you need to prepare alternative cooking methods.
While on La Graciosa, make sure to visit Playa de las Conchas and consider hiking to Montaña Bermeja for breathtaking views. Exploring the entire coast until Playa de Montaña Amarilla is also a pleasant option.
Prices
Camping in Lanzarote at Camping El Salado is completely free, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers.
Permit Application
To camp in La Graciosa, you must apply for a permit online in advance. Register on the Organismo Autónomo de Parques Nacionales website and provide the required details, such as the date of entry and the number of people staying overnight. Reservations can be made up to 2 months in advance, and you can choose your lot once the application is complete.
Camping with a Motorhome in Lanzarote
If you plan to travel with a motorhome, keep in mind that Camping Papagayo de Lanzarote is the only authorized place on the island to spend the night. It’s crucial to book your space well in advance to secure a spot.
